Fourth Street

Gregory Sandifer grew up on North Fourth Street, close enough to Douglass Park to hear the summer leagues from his porch. His father drove a delivery truck. His mother cleaned houses in south Champaign for families whose kids never learned her last name.

He was a strong student at Central, but the distance between good grades and medical school looked like an ocean. No doctor in his family. No doctor on his block either, that anybody could point to.

I treat patients in the same neighborhood I grew up in. That was the plan the whole time.

Ten Blocks

A biology professor at the U of I wrote his recommendation letters and, more than that, treated med school like a normal thing for him to want. He came out of residency with just over $90,000 in debt and offers in three bigger cities.

He opened his practice in Champaign instead. His clinic sits about ten blocks from the house he grew up in, and some of his patients remember him as a boy. He wanted exactly that. A doctor on the block that somebody can point to.
