His story is coming to the series soon.

When the Calls Stopped

Terrell Mackey learned the game at Douglass Park, where the runs were older, stronger, and did not care about your feelings. By his senior year at Central he was all-conference and certain basketball was the whole plan.

The plan lasted three semesters. At a junior college in Kansas he tore his ACL on a routine closeout, and the calls from four-year schools stopped inside a month. He came home at twenty with no ball and no backup.

The ball stops bouncing for everybody. What I do at practice is get you ready for that day.

The Whistle

An old coach got him a job running after-school programs and told him to finish his degree, which he did in pieces, a class at a time, over six years. Coaching found him more than he found it.

Today he's the head basketball coach and athletic director at Central, walking the same halls he walked as a player. Every kid on his roster shows him a grade report before he shows them a game plan. The banners in the gym matter to him. The transcripts matter more.
