Faith & Ministry

Some of the most trusted men in this community lead from a pulpit. Ministry is a real path with real training, and it usually starts years earlier: serving in a youth group, learning to speak, being the dependable one. The churches here have been developing young Black men into leaders for 160 years.

Leadership starts before the mic. Show up. Serve. Learn. Lead. A teen learning the sound board from a mentor in a purple-lit sanctuary.
Serve before you speak. Run sound. Set up chairs. Help somebody. A teen setting up chairs while a mentor runs the mixer at a church food drive.
A calling still needs a plan. Mentorship. Training. A second skill. A young man walking into a glowing ring of scenes: a pulpit, a study desk, service work, a sound booth.

The Plan

  1. Plant yourself in a youth group

    Consistency beats intensity. The kids who show up weekly get asked to lead something, and leading something is where ministry starts.

  2. Serve before you speak

    Set up chairs, run sound, drive the van route. Every pastor on this site did the unglamorous jobs first, and they'll tell you it was the training.

  3. Ask a pastor to mentor you

    The historic Black churches in town, Bethel AME, Salem Baptist, Canaan Baptist, have raised up generations of leaders. A direct, respectful ask gets taken seriously.

  4. Get trained

    Seminary, Bible college, or ministry courses, some online and part-time while you work. Your pastor will know which fits your tradition.

  5. Learn a second trade too

    Most ministers in this town also work jobs, especially early. A skill that pays the bills makes your calling sustainable.

The historic Black churches of C-U

Bethel AME on Park Street has led since 1863, the oldest Black congregation in the county. Salem Baptist and Canaan Baptist have deep youth legacies too. Their programs move faster than their websites, so the real directory is a phone call or a Sunday visit.

Stone Creek Church Youth

Active weekly youth ministry: middle schoolers meet Sundays during the 10am service, 8th-12th graders gather Sunday evenings in homes around C-U, and monthly Rally Nights bring everyone together with food.

The Vineyard Church Youth

Junior high and high school groups meet Sunday mornings at the Urbana campus, with summer socials and real serving roles at the church's Hope Center food ministry, a way to practice leadership young.
