Ten Quiet Years
Victor Osei grew up in the Bronx, sharp and unfocused, the kid teachers called wasted potential until the phrase lost its meaning. He scraped through two years of college, ran out of money, and spent most of his twenties on overnight help desk shifts, resetting passwords for people who yelled at him.
The aimlessness wasn't dramatic. That's the part he wants kids to understand. Nothing bad happened to him. Ten years just went by.

The Night Shift, Upgraded
On one of those overnight shifts he watched a security analyst trace an intrusion in real time and thought, that's the job. He studied for certifications on his own dime, failed one exam twice, and kept going.
He moved to Champaign in 2015 for a security role and now leads a team that watches networks overnight from an office off Neil Street. Same shift he used to dread, except now he's the one they wake up. He tells students the field is hungry for people who notice things. That part can't be taught from a book, but it can be practiced.
